My poor country...

Most companies that are big today have created value in a manner that can not be challenged. Google with the process of searching over the internet, ebay with the idea of a common forum for buyers and sellers, microsoft with the idea of a software for everyone and a host of others. But by stark contrast, we in India have not done much at all.

Agreed that it was an Indian who started Hotmail, but then why did he sell it? Why could he not have stayed in there and grown the company? Did the promoter of MS, Apple, Google, eBay, build it to sell it? No, then why are we doing that? I will tell you why. Fear and the reaction to that fear. We in this country are scared of failure (like almost anywhere else in the world), but we react by evading it. This is the impact of overprotection. We are overprotected by our government, by our parents, by our schools, by our friends, by almost everyone, even God (remember that we stay in that subcontinent which is highly conducive for life, no struggles no too many natural disasters to face). We are now used to the ideology that we don't have to worry about anything. Worst comes to worst my parents will take care of me. Thus why risk anything. Lets just live out our existence in a way that is good and stable. Very few of us have the craving for creating something lasting in this world. All we are obsessed with is money. For god's sake, "Money should be a by-product, not the end."

If you want this country to improve, then we need something radical. Someone needs to tell parents to stop protecting their children but instead teaching them to stand up on their own feet. How many times have I seen people living with their parents under the pretext of a joint family. I don't dispute that, but there is a time when I need to go out and fend for myself and my parents, just like some birds in the wild, should push me over the cliff, if I am ever to learn how to fly. I am an MBA grad, and even in my college I had students who have moved out of their homes for the very first time. That is the problem. There are so many who will never move out of their homes, who will never know how to cook, who will never know where to go to pay the electricity bills, how to get through life without the help from others.

We are brains behind every big company. We are the best people in software, but we are not the ones the world is talking about. Why, you ask? The answer is simple. This world acknowledges the ones who make a difference, not the ones who make the difference normal. Think about it.

Wake up and start running, 'coz this is our only chance to make India great. Once we are gone, God knows what the overprotected next generation would do. Lets get paranoid and make a difference, lest we just pass on this country until someone better (and thats an insult to all of us in the present), comes and makes the difference.

Some thoughts on Entreprenuership...

This is something I had written for entreprenuers and through this I got in touch with a group of entreprenuers in bangalore called the bootstrapers. This article is posted on their yahoo group. Click here to view the page. This group symbolises all that I have spoken, take a look at the group by clicking here.

What drives an entreprenuer is the spirit of creating something, like a mother who gives birth to a child. We are ferocious and gentle, encouraging and punishing, all depending on what stage our idea is in. Once I have said this, I would like to add that it is important to have social acceptance, others saying that it is possible, or at least giving suggestions as to how to make it work. Its just TOO EASY to strike off an entreprenuer and if the entreprenuer is as normal a human as me, then the venture is destined to fail because "Might is Right". Right?

What I hope can be achieved through this forum or group of people is a watering hole for the tired and tattered soul and ego of any entreprenuer, who has faced the wall and is ready to give up. But I am not talking only about giving hope to the soul, but also giving good food and water, to get them back on their feet again and fight the wall yet again.

The idea I am toying with is almost the same as the bootstrapers and other incubators of the world, but with a little more added to it. I am talking about wishing entreprenuers coming together and talking about each other's ideas and ventures and contributing (not being only a passive listener) to a selected venture in whatever way they can (not only money, any way will do). Once a venture succeeds, it can be let out in the world with one or selected people from the founding team going with it. The rest would stay back and talk and contribute to another person's idea.

Think about it. A lot of venture fail the first time failure knocks and we all know that if you can get through enough failures, you are bound to succeed. All I am suggesting is that we should become a team of people with small resources with each one, but a huge pool of resources in cumulation to assist any new venture from within us or any tired venture from outside and get it back on its feet. No we should not only be investing or consulting or incubating or advising. Instead we should do all of that albeit as insiders. Help the venture, stabilize the venture, grow the venture, and finally go with the venture or go to the next venture that needs you.

You will ask me what is the difference. The difference is the same as between a Teacher and a Mother. This group should not only talk about entreprenuership, but practice it, but at the same time not become like a typical incubator, where once the birth is given the venture goes out on its own. The one who feels most attached to the venture can go with it. The others who want more adventure in the true spirit of an entreprenuer will stay back and build more ventures.

We can all come together and start this group. More will join us. We will start many ventures. All will fail. We will cry, fall back on each other and start many more ventures. Then one fine day, one venture will succeed. It will become big and then some of us will follow that venture and manage it. Others will stay back and start some more ventures. More will join us. Then through this long cycle of failures and victories we would have many successful ventures to show for our lives. And some day, God willing, this group will cease to exist when all of us would have become tired of starting ventures and would have settled in managing the ventures we would have followed.

"Love what you do and you will never need to work again."

The Fall from Grace...

They made us what we are. What we believe we are. What we know we can never be. And TEACHERS are the very ones who made me feel trapped within my body the way that I presently am.

Teachers are not only ones who teach in schools or educational centers but each and every soul who we were ready to learn from. To whom we opened our curiosity and questioned beyond shame. Teachers are those breed of people who make us STOP and LISTEN to their words and make us think. Yeah, those lost talents of THINKING and QUESTIONING. Those are the teachers who have fallen from grace, their whole race is dwindling, they are on the verge of extinction (or very near it). And who can hear the pleas?

The pleas of not only the race that is dying, but also of people like me, the students with craning necks, waiting for that nourishment that would make my justify my little life. But, THEY HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE and what a fall it is. The proverbial chicken and egg story is being reversed now. Things are going back, the chickens are crawling bacj into the eggs and the eggs are being swalowed by the chicken. The teachers of yesterday used to make students into the teachers of the coming generations. But teachers today make the perfect breed of followers. Where shall the leader come from? Who shall lead those who need to be led? Every student has a leader in him, but without the teacher's help, the body won't ever have the soul. The student is not alive, is technically inert.
What was a teacher's job then? It was to teach the student how to learn, and point him to those directions where the oceans of knowledge lay. Today, alas, the teachers merely give the students droplets from that ocean and a false sense of having conquered all the knowledge there is to know. The teacher has forgotten to learn and that has limited the learner from becoming a teacher. Every one of us have been curious in our childhood, and that was when we learnt the most. Then someday, a teacher told us not to question, and we stopped learning. The teacher refused the knowledge we were imparting to him and he refused the greatest learning of all. NOT "WHAT TO LEARN" BUT "HOW".

Remember the saying? - "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him fishing and feed him for life"

Teach us "How to learn", not "What to learn".

The Alarm Clock...

It is rightly said - Wake up ONLY when you are DONE sleeping. Not before that and not after that. Then how come the alarm clock ever got invented? And pray why? Why did whoever it was, take so unkindly to the human race and mark sleep as a sin? Imagine if there were a time (some parallel universe maybe) where the alarm clock were not yet invented. You might think that it is impossible and it would not work. Are we sure? Let me oppose that view and try to imagine how it might just have worked.

I feel that the importance of time is in order to facilitate the smooth and independent functioning of life as a whole. I mean, you do your job in time so that the other can take up from there and continue with his job and so on. But seriously, what has the alarm clock actually given us? It has given us a sense of false control over time. I can get up whenever I want and the work would get completed in time. Really? Remember the movie you saw last night, well past bed time, and woke up groggy? The alarm clock did wake you up, no disputes about that. But ironic is it not that the alarm clock, in some way, led you to become overconfident about time keeping, and you woke up groggy? Is it a boon? I don't agree to that.

The alarm clock is the epitome of our times (see, even our times has something to do with time). We have put too much emphasis on doing the thing "on time" rather than doing the thing "right". The alarm clock has given us more time in the day, I agree, but we people, as always have ended up using the wrong benefits from it. We have more time, ironically again, more time to "waste". We get up early, reach office on time, work the whole day (mind you, if you have had a couple of beers the previous night, the day is longer than when without a hangover), finish the working day later than our ancestors did and reach home, set the alarm for the next day and watch TV or movies till our eyelids give in to gravity. (well, maybe you made love that night and it was awesome, but trust me, that is going to be worse than the beer. The hangover lasts longer and affects more body parts than just the head.)

So, was that day perfect? We are working more than our ancestors right? Wrong. We are putting in more of our time to do less work. We are becoming more and more inefficient. The alarm clock is saving time so that we end up wasting more time. Its almost sinful. Cut and paste jobs somehow save the day. Team performance absorbs our incompetence. We are a bunch of excuses. We are a slow down on evolution. Humans are supposed to be growing there brains, use that remaining 95% of their brain cells that is already given, instead of growing paunches and beer bags. Come on, think of it. Are we really putting concerted efforts in the time that we do anything? So many distractions, TV ads, shopping, gossip (the eternal waste of not-so-precious time), etc, etc, etc.

The alarm clock, and the innumerable modifications thereof (ever heard the alarm clock which starts so low that you can hardly here it, and becomes so loud the neighbours wake up?), are just a way of waking up early or on time. There is no way that the alarm clock is improving us in anyway. Trust me when I say this. I have been using the variable volume alarm and now I am trained to switch it off when it is low or sleep right through the loudest it can screech. My room mates dread the time at night when I sent the next days alarm. We have a discussion on what time I should set MY alarm, because they are forced to get up when I refuse to budge. They have their body clocks and I have mine. My body clock does not have an alarm anymore. The small alarm on the bedside has trained me to switch off anything that disturbs my sleep, be it the physical clock or be it my internal body clock.

Maybe on the face of this we are heading for the "personalized alarm clocks", that will ring right into your head when you are sleeping. Maybe better, the alarm would ring with a tone that is audible only to you. Hey, that sounds so much similar to my body clock. I already have one inside my body, but I have forgotten to use it. Thanks to the marketing gurus of the 21st century. Stop this madness, its criminal. We don't use 95% of our brains, we don't justify our existence (do we?) and finally we are recreating what we are already endowed with. Why bother with all this? Why not better ourselves? We are a bunch of excuses (sorry for saying it again, for the want of a better phrase), a bunch of excuses, justifying our mediocre existence.

Wake up (not literally) at least to the alarm that is ringing loud enough all around us (think global warming, pollution, nuclear holocaust, arms race, doomsday) and stop worrying about the smallest of all things that is time in terms of minutes. Change the way life is lived. Do you really think that I can not do my work well in advance so that I would never need an alarm? If I can't then I don't know how much to bite so that chewing is thorough. We have lost it to our own creations. We are trying to play God (and believe me when I say that we are terrible at it), and trying to recreate whatever is already created (think Artificial Intelligence, Cloning, Artificial Insemination, Cryogeneitcs, Hair transplanting, and what not). We humans are a great job of evolution after an unknown length of time (do we really believe that we predicted the Big Bang?). We are messing it up. Let us accept what we are and start moving forward. We have evolved to that level that we can procreate life. Chuck Artificial Intelligence (we already have it), and start working on artificially evolving our intelligence. There are only two scenarios that come to my mind. We continue to populate the universe as we remain the "fittest to survive" by evolving our mind's power, or else (this is the path we are following right now) we discover artificial intelligence and that overshadows us as the ultimate product of creation.

Lets look at the black comedy once again. Some day, our intelligence is going to be considered as the greatest link to the next step in evolution, because we created the next step and perished because we refused to acknowledge that we are not the end-product of evolution. We have become complacent and so ingrained with the snapshot of the present that we deny evolution. Do we all really believe that we are where the long eons of evolution decided to stop? No way my fellow humans. We are just a waypoint on nature's plans and let us acknowledge it. Let us know that the rule of "Differentiate or Die", applies to the whole of humanity. Maybe I should restate the phrase as "Evolution or Extinction". Think about it.

I am not making a blank statement here, but am trying to underline the essense of evolution and that we are right in the middle of it. Let us not deny it. Let us be the tools of evolution in as much as the subjects of it. Let us start endeavours that would help us evolve and survive to be a part of the final episode of the COSMOS. "History repeats itself" and we just can't get to accept this. Start now, as a cohesive race to unravel our role in the large scheme of things and then play our part rightly. We have not been evolved to merely exist, we were evolved to accelerate evolution itself. We are like calculators that would calculate faster than the humans who created it. But should we forget how to calculate? (I would like to confess here that I am pathetic with even simple arithmetic operations like addition, leave alone any more complex task) Sorry to say this, but in the process of evolution, we are the first to be reversing the process.

Why not move ahead? No incentives? Really? Think of a unified planet, no discrimination (the contorted creation of small minds to enforce superiority with no real reason, think Hitler and Jews), in plain words, let us make progress just because we can. Lets make college courses such that they would help students use over 15% of their brains. I can only imagine what we can achieve then. Life is going past us, at an alarming pace (a real alarm this time) and we refuse to acknowledge it. We are victims of our own intelligence (think war, AIDS, Radiation). We are the subjects of this ultimate comedy show we call life. Think for a moment, then laugh heartily and then, for God's sake start worrying, 'coz the joke is on us.

No one has to agree to me, but listen seriously. I might just be making sense.

.....................................................

Birth...

Yes, let me start the saga at the date we were all born, our birthdays. Our very own, very personal day, our birthday. But imagine how many are born on the same day, the same hour, the same minute, hell even on the same second and milli second as yourself. Don't look so personal to me anymore. And I was not refering to just humans. I am refering to every creation. Think a star, think a billion new stars, think white dwarfs, think black holes.

But when was man born? When, even in concept, was man born? Who conceived us? Some say God. I say Chance, pure chance. And chance is not as random as prople try to make it seem. Read, COSMOS by Carl Sagan and try to imagine how even chance, magnified a astronomical number of times, becomes certainity. We were destined to happen. By we, I mean intelligence, not only humans. We were just meant to be. The fact that we have two hands and five fingers on each hand instead of five hands with two fingers on each is again purely chance. And my instincts tell me, that the creatures I am talking about do exist with almost as much certainity as we exist.

Most may not agree with me, and I can not be least bit bothered. I make this point to show how insignificant we really are. We are like gineau pigs of evolution. We still are pigs yet we seem to be all powerful. Ponder on this, did the dianasours ever think themselves prone to extinction? Do we think we can ever become extinct? The answer to both is no and the similarity is cool.

So, a day when we humans were all born. The day an infinitismally small flash of time in the grand life of the COSMOS. And a flash similar to that and we are born. I was born on the 25th of october. To my understanding, I was conceived around 9 months before that. But lets stretch our imaginations and think. If my dad were not there or my mom were not there and so on and so forth, then I would not have existed. Stretch the thought a bit further and you know that my birth was planned unknowingly by my grandparents. So on and so on and we come to that same flash of time when the COSMOS was conceived. So, technically I was born with the universe. And we celebrate my birthday as if it happened 27 years ago.

That is funny. The point of my birth is so interdependent with the life of my surroundings. We could excuse our ancestors for their lack of knowledge. That is why they worshipped the fires as Gods and the Sun as merely a super manifestation of a human. But today we have more knowledge than ever known to have been in the coffers of humanity and yet we think small. Actually, we think smaller. Our intelligence is not our liberator, but our captivator. Intelligence leads to understanding. It also leads to the SELF, the ID, the EGO, the SUPEREGO. And think again, how small is an ego compared to the universe we inhabit.

We humans, are a mere way-point in the long stretch of evolution. I can see it all around me right now. Some towns are dying, some cities are flourishing. Some cities are also dying. We are all dying actually. We are polluting our environment and making it unsuitable for future inhabitation by our own kind. Makes sense to think that in a few centuries, humans as we know would have changed. They would breathe CO and CO2. They will find this earth the best place to be in. We are in the middle of this evolution and we deny it in the very face of it.

What is birth but a new turn on the old way of evolution. Evolution is like a circular Nascar circuit, where the cars evolve within one lap to use their residues of the previous lap to power them through the present one. Where does it end? It does not seem to lead anywhere. Its a circle, remember!

My point? - Simple - Remember the butterflyeffect? The whole of humanity is merely one such event only. Birth is only a concept to facilitate understanding in the limited span of our intelligence. We were always here, and will remain here forever. So, where was I born? Try guessing. At the big bang.

Revolution...

Something really funny hit me today when I was thinking about evolution of our race. I just had the thought that, if I wanted to name backward evolution, then what would I call it. And a word that popped out was "REVOLUTION". Funnyly enough, it made sense and I din'd fight it. So, I am writing about Revolution (read "reverse evolution") and the mankind. And I remembered a picture that I had collected a long long time back that would fit into this scheme perfectly.
Click here to visit the Simpsons Home Page
We are having a revolution right inside our heads. Try and remember how many idiots we must have met every day, and who says that we are not considered one by the rest who meet us? We are changing, we have stopped growing. Life is going a full circle and we don't seem to care. Come on, where are the leaders? Where are the great musicians? We have the largest population of humans to have ever inhabited the earth and ironically enough, the ratio of splendid people has fallen. We have become a mass of followers following the teachings and preachings of all those great men and women of the past.
A saying comes to my head when I think about our situation, "Grey hair does not always signify wisdom. Sometimes its just a proof of age". I like to modify this and apply to us as a whole in the following way, "More people do not signify more brains. Sometimes they just signify the number of divisions a single brain has undergone to marginally fill each of our heads".

Life really sucks... This is proof...
